How does a micro-lending website like Kiva.org work?

Micro-lending websites, such as Kiva.org and OptInNow.org, allow you to select an individual entrepreneur by reading detailed descriptions of their lives and entrepreneurial goals and then issue them a micro-loan!

These lending websites work in the following way:

1. You choose an entrepreneur and the amount of the loan (as little as $25!)
2. Your loan is then transferred to a local Micro-Finance Institution (MFI) or bank that works directly with your entrepreneur.
3. The loan is distributed to the entrepreneur by the local MFI.
4. As the entrepreneur repays the loan to the local MFI, the money is transferred back to you through the lending website.
5. As you receive the loan repayments, you can choose to make another loan or keep your money.
